The Thanksgiving Story

Wow, now that’s what I call an entry gap. I’ve done worse on Calm Down though, so why sweat a couple weeks?

Today’s Thanksgiving (for me) and it started interestingly enough. Yesterday, while I was at work, my grandmother apparently slipped and busted her ass outside the front door (it’s got ceramic tiled floor outside which can be pretty slippery during typhoon weather). Nobody made a big deal about it so we figured it was just a sore bump or whatever.

Well, that night my grandmother had me opening loosely closed jars and lifting pots for her so apparently it was a little more injured than she was letting on. This morning I’m awoken at like 8am by Ate Sally calling for me. She shows me a spot on my grandmother’s arm bruised blue and red. Uhh, not good.

So we head to the Hospital emergency room (Thanks to it being, err- Thanksgiving, all clinics are closed) and me and my little cousin, Nikka, wait outside for like 4 and a half hours for them to do.. whatever it is. Eventually what we come away with is a prescription for vicodin, some x-rays and her arm wrapped up. I expect a heavy ass medical bill.

Nikka was probably bored but she at least feigned politeness and was good enough to stay, but I really was bored out of my mind and annoyed that this is how I spend my rare day off/ Thanksgiving. Eventually an ambulance pulled up and unloaded two people who were in a car accident. One was a teenage boy and the other was an older gentleman who’s head lay on a portion of the gurney soaked in blood. Minutes later a lady showed up. She entered the waiting room for a moment and then was evicted with the rest of us non-patients. Soon she began crying in regular wails like a dying alarm siren. I thought my day was rough because my grandmother fractured her arm and I had to wait for 4 fucking hours to let her get discharged? My grandmother went through brain surgery about a year ago because of an aneurysm and she miraculously came away from it with only a fizzed short term memory. What if she hit her head when she fell? Fuck a fracture.

I usually don’t put much weight on Thanksgiving (being a subscriber to the theory that the first Thanksgiving was fueled by Native American suffering), but right now, it really is a day where I’m thankful for things. I guess it’s pretty obvious at this point what for.

(Another sappy post to come later.)
